Cypress Advances to OEC Final
The Chargers beat the Saddleback Bobcats 12-6 to move on to the conference final.
CYPRESS, CA - Cypress College women's flag football (18-5, 5-2 OEC) punched their ticket to the OEC Finals with a hard-fought 12-6 victory over Saddleback (16-6, 2-5 OEC) on Thursday evening.
The Chargers controlled the tempo on both sides of the ball, using a pair of touchdown drives in the middle quarters to secure the win and keep their postseason run alive. After a scoreless opening frame, Cypress broke through in the second quarter with a 10-play, 65-yard drive capped by a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.
Cypress added to its advantage in the third quarter, striking quickly on a five-play, 66-yard drive to extend the lead to 12-0. The Chargers' defense did the rest, holding Saddleback scoreless for nearly the entire contest before allowing a late touchdown in the final minute.
Quarterback Maddy Banks led the offense with an efficient performance, completing 22 of 35 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns while avoiding turnovers. Her connection with Emma Farias and Melony Bernabe proved pivotal, as both receivers hauled in touchdown receptions to account for Cypress' scoring.
Farias finished with seven catches for 59 yards and a touchdown, while Bernabe added three receptions for 45 yards and a score. Devoni Ray contributed with five receptions for a team-high 67 yards, helping the Chargers total 211 passing yards on the night.
Defensively, Cypress came up with key stops throughout the game, highlighted by three interceptions and a strong third-down effort that limited Saddleback to just 1-of-7 conversions. Devoni Ray and Alisa Kangas each recorded impact plays in the backfield, while multiple Chargers contributed to a balanced defensive effort.
